Rock Gardens

Discovering Alpine Geology. The geological geological history of the Aosta Valley is told in two rock gardens set up in Pollein, on the plain east of Aosta, and Fontainemore, in the Lys Valley, respectively.

At the Grande Place in Pollein, a vast equipped green area a couple of kilometers from Aosta, a path carved out of the park traces the riverbed of the Dora Baltea, showing the different rocks that make up the region's mountains. The 50 rocks, in blocks of various sizes, follow one another in a geologically and geographically ordered sequence: from the Ivrea Moraine Amphitheater to Mont Blanc, traversing the complex geological systems that make up this portion of the Alpine arc. Each boulder is accompanied by a descriptive card.

The Fontainemore rock garden in the Mont Mars nature reserve, on the other hand, is dedicated to the geological history of the Lys valley. Not far from the nature reserve visitor center is the educational-environmental trail The Stones of the Lys, which consists of a dozen large rocks such as gneiss, marble and schist, representative of valley minerals.

Designed to be enjoyed by different categories of users, the garden is accessible to the disabled, and is complemented by a green space for children and a pond.
