Zermatt in Summer
Zermatt's location on the slopes of the Matterhorn and in the center of a giant region devoted to hiking and skiing makes it one of the most attractive tourist resorts. The ski area includes 63 mountain railways and more than 300 kilometers of slopes. The "Matterhorn glacier paradise" region is the largest and highest summer ski area in Europe. Numerous national ski teams train here in summer.
The region is legendary for climbers: the Haute Route, an international multi-day and challenging route from Mont Blanc, ends in Zermatt. More than 400 kilometers of hiking trails wind through the interior of the Mattertal and start here, such as partially paved mule trails dating back to the 13th century. Hiking, biking, climbing and high altitude tours are the beloved activities for the summer and fall seasons. The four-thousand-mile peaks attract many mountaineers each year. The 400 km of hiking trails allow even the least prepared guests to discover the mountain landscape around Zermatt.
The cogwheel railway departs from Zermatt and reaches the Gornergrat at 3089 meters above sea level. From here there is a marvelous view of the Matterhorn, the glacier and the Monte Rosa massif.
The highest vantage point in Europe (3883 m above sea level) reached by cable car also offers a fascinating panoramic view of the Matterhorn (4478 m) and the peaks of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps. Fifteen meters below the ice surface it is possible to admire the glacier palace. Six ski lifts and a gondola here connect the Matterhorn Glacier Paradies, the highest summer ski area in the Alps on the Theodul Glacier.
